A 5-Step Prompt To Land More Data Job Interviews

The only thing worse than summer temperatures (if you’re in the western hemisphere, that is) is a summer job search.

Conventionally, summer isn’t the best time to apply for work; you could probably tell this if you’re currently working and find yourself accepting an overwhelming amount of OOO cal invites.

If you are braving the heat of the job market, I want to share a more targeted and automated approach that will prevent you from the worst kind of summer burn–burn out.

This prompt can be fed to any AI Agent, but I provided it to Google Gemini.

“You’re a technical recruiter.
I’m going to feed you the description for a few positions I’m applying for. Then I’m going to provide my resume. After you digest both materials, I want you to rate my strength as a candidate for the position on a scale of 1–5.
Then, I want you to tell me how closely (in percentages) my resume aligns with the posted description.
Next, provide your opinion on whether the role aligns with the “Summary” on my resume.
After that, provide suggestions for updating my resume so I can be in the strongest position to apply. Finally, when I provide additional job descriptions, rank my matches against one another, i.e.
-Company A (Strongest Match)
-Company B (Next Closest Match) ”

Though the output the Agent provides is nice, what makes this a powerful jumping off point is the dialogue it starts with the AI.

After Gemini ingests my resume and job descriptions, we can have specific conversations about how to present my experience, down to a single key word or bullet point.

For instance, I can ask it: “How do I better illustrate my experience overseeing data privacy audits and complying with regulations like GDPR?”

I find iterating over a resume I’ve worked to create and refine to be much more impactful than having an AI Agent generate a resume from scratch.

Feel free to steal this prompt to beat the heat of data recruiting.

Thanks for ingesting,

-Zach Quinn
